TOUR DESCRIPTION

DAY 1: CHICAGO

Overnight stay: Chicago

Flight with well-known scheduled airline service from Frankfurt am Main or Hamburg (optional) to Chicago (connecting flight possible). Meeting in the terminal with your qualified road captain who accompanies you during the whole trip.

DAY 2: CHICAGO

Overnight stay: Chicago

Day at leisure. The historic metropolis on the shore of Lake Michigan is going to surprise you. There are many ways to discover Chicago, however, the best starting point is very high. From 360 Chicago or Willis Tower you have a great panoramic view to the complete city. Back on the floor you have many possibilities: by double-decker bus, trolley, boat, there is something for everyone. In the evening, we have a joint dinner.

DAY 3: SPRINGFIELD

Day´s stage: 325 km – overnight stay in Springfield

After loading our luggage into the support vehicle, a shuttle takes us to the place where we collect our bikes. On the first part of the trip we ride through farm landscapes which are typical for the Midwest, along historic Route 66. We have an intermediate stop at Dixie Truck Stop and in Bloomington, the home of historic Route 66 Memory Lane. The attractions on our route of today are numerous… Our destination is Springfield with many attractions related to the 16th President of the United States, Abraham Lincoln. We make a detour to Hall´s Harley dealer.

DAY 4: ST. LOUIS

Day´s stage: 180 km – overnight stay in St. Louis

Today we ride on along Route 66 with many attractions. We visit the statue “The Lady of the Highway” and stop at Ariston Café in Litchfield. In any case we make a side trip to “Chain of Rocks Bridge”, crossing the Mississippi. In the middle of the river there is a kink of 20 degrees in the bridge, which makes it very special. St. Louis can be defined as open, adventurous, exciting and impressive. The world-famous symbol of St. Louis is the Gateway Arch, where you gain a good overview. You should take one of the two trains inside the arch and go upstairs. There you have a fantastic view out of the 16 windows to city and Mississippi. A steamboat trip on the Mississippi makes this wonderful day perfect (optional extra).

DAY 5: SPRINGFIELD

Day´s stage: 360 km – overnight stay in Springfield

We ride on to the west in the direction of Rolla. This small town is located on the foot of the Ozark, a highland region. We ride through further small villages and reach Fantastic Caverns, an interesting stalactite cave, which you can visit by jeep-drawn tram. Springfield in Missouri is often called “The Queen City of the Ozarks”. We make a detour to Denney´s Harley dealer.

DAY 6: OKLAHOMA CITY

Day´s stage: 497 km – overnight stay in Oklahoma City

Today we ride through several smaller villages on our direct way to Oklahoma City, the capital of Oklahoma County. It is a mixture of American natives, ranchers, rich oil barons and ambitious yuppies, which make the city as characteristic. We are going to visit the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum. Visitors find more than 20,000 exhibition pieces here, which deal with history and culture of the American West. The replica of a historic western city is part of the museum. “The Myriad Botanical Gardens” is one of most beautiful places in Oklahoma. Main attraction of the garden is the orangery, the “Crystal Bridge”. If you like you can visit the Harley dealer in Oklahoma City.

DAY 7: AMARILLO

Day´s stage: 420 km – overnight stay in Amarillo

We ride through Clinton, the key place on Route 66. In Texola we cross the border to Texas. This place is close to the 100th degree of longitude and after altogether 8 re-measurements of the border line between Oklahoma and Texas, the place belonged to Texas in one case and temporarily to Oklahoma in the other. Today most of the houses are empty and Texola is rather a ghost town. A highlight is the U-Drop Inn, an old filling station with Café in the oil city of Shamrock and Devil´s Rope Museum. We visit the 58-m high freestanding cross in Groom. Our destination Amarillo is perfectly suited to get an impression of Texas. From canyons to old Cadillacs, from gigantic steaks to huge landscapes, this city is a dream for Wild West fans. In Amarillo, you find Tripp´s Harley Davidson.

DAY 8: SANTA FE

Day´s stage: 450 km – overnight stay in Santa Fe

Our first stop this morning is the most photographed attraction on a road trip on Route 66: Cadillac Ranch. Cadillac Ranch is not a ranch, but a public art installation about 5 km west of Amarillo in Texas. You see ten Cadillacs which have been put diagonally into the floor up to their halves. We pass many cattle farms and cross the border to New Mexico on our way to Santa Fe. Santa Fe is located at an altitude of about 2000 m. Including about 200 galleries it is one of the most important places of the American art scene. We visit Harley Davidson in Santa Fe.

DAY 9: SANTA FE

Day´s stage: about 250 km – overnight stay in Santa Fe

Day at leisure. We offer a trip to Albuquerque (biggest city in New Mexico) or to Indian village Taos, the oldest continuously inhabited settlement in the USA. The village Taos Pueblo is a tourist attraction today. The inhabitants live almost exclusively from tourism and partly from agriculture. The UNESCO declared the village Taos Pueblo as world heritage site in 1992. It is located on the Rio Grande river valley.

DAY 10: GALLUP

Day´s stage: 350 km – overnight stay in Gallup

Our first destination today is the small village Madrid in New Mexico. It has become famous by the film “Born to be wild – Wild hogs” from the year 2007, which was partly shot here. We ride along the magnificent Turquoise Trail. If we are lucky, we see a bison on roadside. We have a short break at Harley Thunderbird in Albuquerque and cross the Rio Grande afterwards, which originates in the Rocky Mountains. Our destination is Gallup. In this area, many films have been shot in the heyday of American western movies, such as films with John Wane, Spencer Tracy, Gregory Peck etc.

DAY 11: WILLIAMS

Day´s stage: 362 km – overnight stay in Williams

We ride along Route 66 through several small villages until we reach Petrified Forest National Park. Petrified Forest National Park is a national park of the United States in the northeast of Arizona. The park belongs to the south Colorado Plateau and to the Painted Desert, a desert of about 1,800 m over the sea. We have a short trip to Painted Desert Inn, one of the most beautiful adobe buildings in Arizona. We cross Holbrook. One of the most famous attractions of the village is Wigwam Motel on historic Route 66. The free-standing bungalows have been built according to original Indian tepees. However, the buildings are made of concrete. Another stop is at Jack Rabbits Trading Post. We ride on through Winslow. This village is famous above all for the Barringer Crater, the first officially confirmed impact crater of a meteorite. There is a visitor center with a museum and among other things the original of a space capsule of the 1960s is exhibited. We visit the Meteor Crater National Monument. Another destination is Walnut Canyon National Monument. The canyon contains a unique accumulation of rock housings constructed in the precipice. We ride through Flagstaff, the gate to the Grand Canyon, and follow Route 66, stopping finally in Bellemont/Arizona at the Harley dealer. We roast our own burgers. Bellemont is the highest settlement on Route 66 (7,132 feet). We finally arrive in Williams, our destination of today. Williams is a western town with a special flair.

DAY 12: WILLIAMS

Day´s stage: 194 km – overnight stay in Williams

We make a day trip to Grand Canyon. The Grand Canyon belongs to the biggest natural wonders on earth and is visited by about 5 million people every year.

We have enough time to enjoy Grand Canyon and if we want, we take part in a helicopter tour over the area (optional extra).

DAY 13: LAUGHLIN

Day´s stage: 300 km – overnight stay in Laughlin

Many highlights are scheduled for today. Our destinations are: - Angel Delgadillo´s Route 66 Gift Shop in Seligman, the old barber (born in 1927) is meanwhile considered the guardian angel or father of Route 66. As member and co-founder of the Route 66 Association he has become popular worldwide. You normally meet him in the shop…, - Hackberry´s General Store, the even most famous museum on Route 66 in Arizona.

We ride along one of the most beautiful sections of Mother Road over the curvy Sitgreaves Pass to Kingman. There we stop at the Harley dealer. The next destination is the former gold mining town Oatman in the Black Mountains in the US state of Arizona. It is at Route 66. Wild donkeys “Burros” run around freely in the city. They come from packhorses, which their owners no longer needed and which were left to themselves.

We stay overnight in Laughlin. Laughlin is simply a set of casino hotels directly on the Colorado River. We have an intermediate stop here. It is always hotter in Laughlin than in Las Vegas. Every year on the third weekend in April the biggest Harley meeting takes place in the west of the USA. Laughlin is probably also the only place, where you can ride by water taxi on the Colorado from casino to casino, which is a good thing, because many retirees or handicapped persons with oxygen tents gamble. You should not miss the cheap trip by water taxi.

DAY 14: BARSTOW

Day´s stage: 320 km – overnight stay in Barstow

In the morning, we ride through the Mojave Desert, before arriving at the small desert location of Amboy. We stop at Roy´s Café with its big advertising sign, which has become a symbol for Route 66. The Amboy scenery is shown in many commercials. The legendary Bagdad Café is in the next village Bagdad. We make a detour to Calico Ghost Town. Calico was founded in 1881 due to silver deposits in the mountains around. In the best times, the village had several thousand inhabitants. The big time of silver digging, however, did not take long and therefore Calico has become a ghost town since the beginning of the 20th century. Today the total area is a “historic park”. You pay 8 USD and take a walk through the Wild West, how you imagine it. Our destination is Barstow in California. The village is characterized by the railway.

DAY 15: LOS ANGELES

Day´s stage: 300 km – overnight stay in Los Angeles

On our way to LA we ride along curvy Angel´s Crest Highway through the mountains. We stop at biker meeting point “Newcombs Ranch” with delicious food and excellent service. We ride on to Topanga Canyon, a wonderful experience! Route 66 ends in Santa Monica, where we have a short trip to pier and Harley dealer, before riding to Los Angeles. We return our bikes here. An optional extra in the evening is a private city tour in a van.

DAY 16: LOS ANGELES

Overnight stay in Los Angeles

Day at leisure. Los Angeles is one of the most mysterious and fascinating places in the world. You will possibly meet film stars on the street.
