TOUR DESCRIPTION
DAY 1: SAN FRANCISCO
Overnight stay in San Francisco
Flight with well-known scheduled airline service from Frankfurt am Main or Hamburg (optinal) to San Francisco (connecting flight possible). Meeting in the terminal with your qualified road captain who accompanies you during the whole trip.
DAY 2: MONTEREY
Day´s stage: 186 km – overnight stay in Monterey
After breakfast, we load our luggage into the support vehicle and collect our bikes at the rental station. We start and ride directly over Daly City to Highway 1. From now on the road fulfils all expectations you place on a coastal landscape. Beaches lined with palms, wonderful dune landscapes to jagged rocks and the surf of the Pacific. Diversified fauna and dense forests with gigantic sequoias.
We ride along the coast in the direction of Santa Cruz with the famous Boardwalk, naturally not without taking any photos. Keep your eyes open – you may discover whales! We ride on over Moss Landing, famous for whale watching, to Monterey, a peninsular, surrounded by the Pacific on three sides. This former Spanish colonial capital has become famous due to John Steinbeck´s novel “Cannery Row”. One of the most popular attractions in this city is the Monterey Bay Aquarium, one of the biggest and most modern of its kind in the world. A visit is worth wile! The Old Fisherman´s Wharf invites you to a visit. Some of the best fish restaurants are on the pier. In Monterey, you can find a Harley dealer, too.
DAY 3: SANTA MARIA
Day´s stage: 280 km – overnight stay in Santa Maria
We ride on along Highway 1 to the south. First, we visit Point Lobos State Park, one of the most beautiful places on the dream road due to its enormous variety: the strangest stone structures at the water´s edge, jagged rocks, dense forests and vast amounts of sea lions and rodents. We ride through the Carmel Highlands over Bixby Creek Bridge. The bridge is made of reinforced concrete and belongs to the most famous structures on Highway 1. We ride on Big Sur, a coast line with a length of 100 km.
The area has often served as scenery for TV and cinema films, such as above all “Basic Instinct” with Sharon Stone. After San Simeon, we stop at Elephant Seal Rookery and watch the seals playing. Our destination of today is Santa Maria in California. Santa Maria belongs to the most important wine-growing districts of the US state. In the region, first-class Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grapes grow. They are bottled on-site. Harley Davidson is represented here.
DAY 4: LOS ANGELES
Day´s stage: 300 km – overnight stay in Los Angeles
We ride on along the wine-growing districts on Route 1 to Santa Barbara. The city has developed during the 20th century to the most expensive living area in the USA. We pass Stearns Wharf, the probably most often visited attraction of Santa Barbara. We enjoy the view from the pier of the historic quay from the year 1872. Afterwards we visit Mission Santa Barbara, a Spanish missionary station of the Franciscan order.
We ride on over Malibu, Malibu Pier and Santa Monica Pier. Santa Monica Pier is one of the most famous attractions and the symbol of the Californian city of Santa Monica. It starts from Colorado Avenue and extends over Santa Monica State Beach (public beach) to the Pacific Ocean. At the same time, it is the endpoint of famous Route 66. We arrive in Los Angeles, the huge metropolis on the Pacific Ocean, which has something to offer for everyone. Optionally you can take part in a city tour in an air-conditioned van.
DAY 5: LOS ANGELES
Overnight stay in Los Angeles
Day at leisure. Los Angeles is one of the most mysterious and fascinating places in the world. You may really meet film stars on the street.
DAY 6: FRESNO
Day´s stage: 350 km – overnight stay in Fresno
We ride over Bakersfield to Fresno and cross Los Padres National Forest. Flora and fauna are versatile and a true eye-catcher. The climate in Bakersfield is Mediterranean and the highest measured temperatures are up to 48 degrees. Oil was discovered relatively early in this area. Fields and some rigs are still in operation today.
Fresno is the biggest city in Central Valley, the most productive cultivation area in California. There are fruit stands everywhere in summer. We visit the Harley dealer, before arriving at the hotel.
DAY 7: FRESNO
Day´s stage: 290 km – overnight stay in Fresno
Today we make a day trip. We ride to Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Park. The landscape of both neighboring parks is very versatile due to their extremely different altitudes of 412 m up to 4000 m. Gigantic mountains, deep canyons and high trees offer the most different living conditions for animals and plants.
The main attraction are the impressive giant sequoia trees, which reach an altitude of more than 80 m and a diameter of more than 11 m. Our destinations of today are: - General Grant Tree (the second largest living tree on earth, about 1500 – 1900 years old), - General Sherman Tree (the biggest living tree on earth, about 1900 -2500 years old) and, - naturally walking and riding through a tree trunk!
DAY 8: MAMMOTH LAKES
Day´s stage: 350 km – overnight stay in Mammoth Lakes
Today we enjoy one highlight after the other. We cross Yosemite National Park, famous for its impressive granite rocks and waterfalls – one of the most fascinating and breathtaking landscapes in California. We ride to Glacier Point. From the Glacier Point, a steep slope of granite with an altitude of 2,199 m towering above Yosemite Valley, you can view and greatly enjoy the most famous attractions of the park: Half Dome, Clouds Rest, Liberty Cap, Vernal and Nevada Falls and High Sierra around it.
We ride over Tioga Pass. Tioga Pass is a mountain pass with an altitude of 3,031 m in the Sierra Nevada. It is the highest highway pass in California and Sierra Nevada. At Olmsted Point at the highest point at 3,031 m you have a fantastic view. On our way, we pass wonderful clear mountain lakes. We stay overnight in Mammoth Lakes, one of the most famous ski resorts in California. Bears live here, too.
DAY 9: RENO
Day´s stage: 310 km – overnight stay in Reno
We ride through the wonderful Inyo National Forest to Mono Lake. It is three times saltier than the oceans and very contaminated with arsenic. It looks scary with its bizarre tuff formations. We ride on a wonderful curvy road towards Nevada. The border runs through Topaz Lake. We arrive at Carson City, the capital of the US state of Nevada, famous for Ponderosa Ranch in Bonanza.
We stop at the Harley dealer and make a detour to Glenbrook at Lake Tahoe. Our destination is Reno, a famous place for gamblers. Compared with Las Vegas everything, however, is a little bit smaller. Let´s see, if we are lucky…
DAY 10: RENO
Day´s stage: 100 km – overnight stay in Reno
Day trip to Virginia City – a very nice western town. Here we find roads which tell stories about the gold rush. A walk through the city takes you into the past. If you are interested in extraordinary souvenirs, you will surely find the right one. The versatile offer ranges from cowboy outfits to original Indian jewelry. Numerous saloons offer delicious food.
DAY 11: RED BLUFF
Day´s stage: 330 km – overnight stay in Red Bluff
We cross the border to California at Honey Lake and pass Lake Almanor. We ride directly to Lassen Volcanic National Park, which is at an altitude of 2000 m. Steaming Sulphur vents, bubbling mud pots, boiling springs – all these natural phenomena make clear that earth has not yet come to a rest in this fascinating park. The volcano of the park “Lassen Peak” erupted last time in the year 1914 and was active 3 years long. Wonderful Lake Helen is in the National Park and our destination Red Bluff is not far away.
DAY 12: SACRAMENTO
Day´s stage: 230 km – overnight stay in Sacramento
We ride directly to Sacramento, the capital of California. We are going to arrive in the early afternoon. Optionally bookable is a city tour in a luxury limousine with chauffeur and champagne. The city offers a great deal to see.
DAY 13: SAN FRANCISCO
Day´s stage: 20 km – overnight stay in San Francisco
Today we ride back to San Francisco. We have again chosen a very special route for our last bike day. We ride along a wonderful curvy road over the fascinating peninsular Point Reyes National Seashore, a protected area on the Pacific Coast, and stop sometimes to take a photo. We pass Stinson Beach on Panoramic Highway 1 and ride through Mount Tamalpais State Park. We have a short trip to Muir Woods National Monument, where we may visit the Redwood Sequoias, impressive gigantic trees. You can even stand in a hollow tree trunk. We ride through Sausalito, directly on the San Francisco Bay. Afterwards we ride over the famous Golden Gate Bridge, symbol of the bay and for many people even symbol of the United States – naturally we stop for photos. Then we return our bikes and are taken by shuttle back to our hotel at Union Square.
DAY 14: SAN FRANCISCO
Overnight stay: SAN FRANCISCO
Today and tomorrow at leisure. In San Francisco you need at least 2 days to get an overview of the city. The city center is structured in chessboard pattern and you can explore it conveniently by cable car. Downtown, Union Square, Chinatown, Lombard Street and Fisherman´s Wharf with Pier 39 are only a few places you should visit.
DAY 15: SAN FRANCISCO
Overnight stay in San Francisco
Day at leisure. Optional extra: visit of former prison Alcatraz.
DAY 16: FLIGHT HOME
A shuttle takes you to the airport and we must say goodbye (connecting flight possible).
